Dead Space 3: Why the 'dumbed-down' action game additions you're scared of actually make it a better survival-horror

Co-op. Proper machine guns. Cover-shooting against human enemies. Loads of ammo. Co-op. All of these things more often than not utterly ruin a horror game (especially co-op), so I'd been scared of Dead Space 3 for all the wrong reasons since its E3 2012 reveal. But now I've played it, I can happily tell you that none of the above makes this second sequel any less true to its brutally disturbing roots. In fact they make it even better.

Trust me, I have not gone mad. And I shall now address each of the previously perturbing things about Dead Space 3, so that you truly know that I have not gone mad.

You can erase any hint of the co-op mode's existence

Co-op, the accepted wisdom goes, usually makes most games better. In the case of the horror genre though, that statement is only accurate as far as you replace the word "usually" with "categorically and without fail", and swap out "better" with "a lightweight, irritating atmosphere vacuum". Throw in the option of a second player, you see, and you all-too-often get a story written around two characters by default. And thus, even when choosing to play alone, you end up with a perpetually present ammo-thief/target-blocker/one-liner generator/tension sponge, hobbling unconvincingly alongside you, making the whole thing a rather tiresome and unexciting affair. Or, to use a more economical description, you end up with Resident Evil 5.

Above: You will note how there is only one person in this screenshot

Not so in Dead Space 3. While I was flat-out miserable at the first mention of Dead Space getting co-op, and borderline catatonic after the E3 demo, it turns out developer Visceral has actually side-stepped every potential problem by way of a very simple technique. Co-op character John Carver just isn't in the game when you're not playing solo. The approach, obviously, has been around since Contra, but for some reason most devs have seemed completely oblivious to it this generation.

Implementing it has taken a bit of extra work (two versions of the story for a start, with Carver appearing as an occasional NPC in the single-player mode), but Visceral seems to appreciate that extra effort is worth it if it means not ruining the core appeal of the game.

Above: Same here, plus a Necromorph doing the dance from Thriller

And aside from that, there are actually some bonuses to be had from co-op. For instance the totally drop-in, drop-out nature of both the mode and Carver himself means that should you hit a difficulty bottle-neck you can always bring a friend in for a bit of temporary help before continuing on your own. And, post-completion, New Game+ is fully available in co-op. With branching paths, the return of DS1's more explorable hub structure, and a bunch of extra, co-op only side-missions - not to mention NG+'s weapon and armour boosts -  you can essentially turn Dead Space 3 into two completely different games depending on how you play it. Oh, and you wouldn't believe how fun Dead Space's trademark corpse-stomping is with two players.

Isaac's new manoeuvrability doesn't make him a badass.
It has the opposite effect

Isaac can now duck and perform evasive rolls in Dead Space 3. So it's Gears of Dead Space: Drake's Misfortune, right? Wrong. While Isaac's new found manoeuvrability might send alarm bells going off in your head (provided you have some kind of crazy Inspector Gadget style hazard warning system implanted into your cranium), in reality they haven't actually changed the core survival horror gameplay much. Because in reality, they're not half as useful as you might expect.

Above: Go on, roll your way out of that one

Isaac's evasive roll, for instance, is a rather stiff and clunky affair, and nigh impossible to accurately control when trying to roll at diagonals. Basically, it's a combat roll focused through the lens of cumbersome survival horror control, rather than survival horror control ruined with the addition of a combat roll. In fact, if anything, it's a hindrance in DS3's tight, cramped, black-as-an-eight-ball's-bumhole corridors. With little room even for traditional movement, a flailing leap into a wall is hardly going to help you stay on top of a tricky combat situation. In fact the only real use I found for it was in making a large boss' charging attack less frustrating. And let's face it, that sort of thing did need fixing.

Similarly, Isaac's new crouch seems useless except in specific cover-shooting scenarios (which I'll come onto in the next bit). Again, it's a rather stiff and slow manoeuvre, and thus it's about as effective against Dead Space's bestiary of thrashing, scrabbling, whip-lashing beasties as trying to stab a flaming Balrog with an ice-cream cone. Instead, it seems only really intended for use in squatting behind boxes while angry men fire bullets at the space where your head would otherwise have been. And speaking of that…

Cover-shooting is scary rather than exhilarating

Cover-shooting. Men. Guns. Open spaces. Total loss of brand identity. Rubbish. I know what you're thinking, and you should not feel silly for thinking that. I was thinking the same thing until I played Dead Space 3, and I'm brilliant and certainly far from silly. But the fact is we need not have worried. When men with guns do appear in open spaces and force you to shoot them from cover in Dead Space 3, it's far from a gung-ho, Chuck-Norris-with-a-chaingun affair. In fact it's pretty oppressive.

Above: Gung-ho gets you gibbed. A nice alliterative piece of Dead Space 3 advice for you there

Human enemies are bullet-sponges, soaking up multiple hits from the very same tools that would split a Necromorph in half with a single shot. They can also put you down in no time at all, forcing an approach much closer to cower-and-crap-yourself than fire-and-forget. Without a specific lock-to-cover system (instead the game gives you a context-sensitive pop-up-and-shoot movement when it realises you're ducking behind cover) there's none of the sense of safety you get in Gears of War or Uncharted. And again, Isaac's considerably more lumpen movements only compound the feeling of being on the back foot.

Basically, it works. It probably has no right to, but thanks to a bit of careful implementation, it actually does. So that's another thing less to worry about. As is…

Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault preview - Holding the fort

Coinciding with the dynamic Lombax/robot duo's 10th anniversary, Insomniac Games recently revealed Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, a PSN downloadable that's trying something new with the revered series. Instead of the typical planet-hopping, robot-blastin' progression, Full Frontal Assault tasks Ratchet with an entirely new mission: tower defense. Taking a page from recent greats like Orcs Must Die!, FFA blends the classic R&C exploration and platforming elements with base defense in some addicting-looking single player or co-op action.

The enemies in question this time around are the Grungoids, feared throughout the galaxy for attacking defenseless planets in waves. Ratchet and co. don't take too kindly to their invasions, so they've taken it upon himself to be the barrier between the Grungoid hordes and global domination. In the co-op mode, you'll be combining forces (or competiting) with your friends as Ratchet, Clank, or that lovable lout Captain Quark. As always, your impressive, upgradable space-age artillery is the star of the show – only here, the wreckage-wreaking weapons are laid down as turrets just as often as they're wielded in your capable hands.

As the Grungoid forces approach your blockade from one of two sides (at least on the level we saw), they'll be met with opposition in the forms of force fields, inventive mines, and about four to six deployable turrets ranging from cannons and rocket launchers to machine guns and flamethrowers. The traditional R&C cleverness when it comes to weapon design seemed most prominent in the non-turret defenses: obstacles like a Groovitron Mine (a disco ball that forces the enemy to bust a move), time-slowing traps, and pads that polymorph Grungoids into hilariously inert sheep are all fair game in your efforts to keep the purple, tentacle Grungoids at bay.

But those sweet turrets and defensive structures come at a cost – bolts, the beloved currency of the Ratchet & Clank universe. You'll gain the metallic currency as you wallop incoming Grungoids (or burn them to a crisp with a row of flame jets), but to really rake in the bolts, you'll need to get outside your comfort zone. That means leaving your base behind to explore the wide-open areas leading up to your defenses, and hoping that your turrets can fend for themselves and protect your generators for the time being. While one half of gameplay involves strategically guarding your base, the other comes from zipping around the map with Ratchet's slick Hoverboots.

Out in the wild, you'll find Ratchet's usual arsenal of futuristic firepower, like freeze pistols or rocket guns, in drop pods littered throughout each level. The harder it is to find the given pod, the greater the armament reward; for instance, when Ratchet hit a boost pad just so, he sprang up onto a hidden platform that led to an electrified rail. After skillfully grinding the length of the trap-laden rail, Ratchet found himself in an ancient temple that housed a gigantic missile launcher. Works for us.

FFA encourages an interesting mix of offense and defense – every inch you explore into the nook-and-cranny filled environment, you're getting a bit further from the home base that could need your attention during a particularly-brutal attack. The online modes add another addictive wrinkle to the action: leveling up through stage-based medal awards. As you level with your pals, you'll unlock perks – though Insomniac wasn't ready to go into detail on these, it sounds like a system that'll add massive amounts of replay value.

Just as the implementation of Horde mode in Mass Effect 3 was a nice, shockingly-addictive surprise, we're betting that we'll sink countless hours into perfecting our FFA defense plans with friends. Look for it on PSN when it's released this fall.

Dead Space 3 preview – New single player demo brings space back to the series

At E3 this year EA gave the world its first look at Dead Space 3. Though there was much to be impressed by, some fans of the series were concerned about the changes on display. The once solitary Isaac had a new, optional co-op partner, and the quiet of outer space was replaced by the white noise of a barren, snowy planet. But don't assume that that's all there is to the game, as our first hands-on demo showed that Dead Space 3 has much left to reveal, and that includes single player scares in outer space.

http://www.gamesradar.com/dead-space-3-preview-new-single-player-demo-brings-space-back-series/

This new stage takes place before the E3 demo, implying there's a clear separation in the plot between this section set in space and when Isaac lands on the ice world. From the start the demo was almost the complete opposite of the E3 gameplay. Isaac is alone. He's in an eerily quiet, derelict spacecraft. Necromorphs are hiding in every corner. The whole purpose of the demo seemed tailored to leave the player thinking, "This feels just like classic Dead Space." By the end of our time with it, that's just what we were thinking.

We began our walk through the dimly lit hallways of the seemingly empty spaceship searching for the computer part that was the goal in the mission. We quickly got back into the groove of the franchise, walking the eerie ship with our flashlight and gun out, searching dark corners for movement. The first Necro still took us by surprise, busting out of a cooling grate we overlooked, but we proficiently removed its limbs with the Plasma Cutter. As we stomped the corpse to collect its loot, it was like the 15 months since we last played Dead Space 2 had disappeared.

That's not to say everything was the same, since we got our first taste of updates to powers like Kinesis. In addition to merely shifting items in specific directions, you can now rotate and pivot specific items in the environment, which added a little more variety to exploring the stage. A similar dusting of variety is true for Isaac's dynamic new moves. We were so used to Isaac's defined movements from the earlier games, it took time to adjust to his ability to dive in multiple directions and duck behind cover. At one point an exploding Necromorph got within reach of hitting us, but at the last second we remembered we could dive to safety, which we quickly did.

Our short time with the game ended with taking down a room full of standard Necromorphs and eventually finding the important piece of tech we were looking for. The section of gameplay was welcomingly familiar, but lacked the narrative weight we were used to in most Dead Space gameplay chunks, and we soon found out why. Apparently this section was our introduction to another new feature in Dead Space 3, side quests.

This was a wholly optional adventure, the main goal to collect a rare item for use in the mysterious new weapon upgrade system. We were also told that the fairly simple timing-based puzzle that ended our search would have had a further wrinkle had we gone through the mission with our optional co-op partner. Apparently Dead Space 3 will be full of voluntary missions like these, which is a decidedly different approach than the previous linear games. Finally, though the Plasma Cutter had a very familiar feel to it, the second weapon we had was a weird mixture of previous weapons, another hint to the developer's bigger plans for changing the weapon upgrade system.

Our brief time with the game was a seeming throwback that ended up teaching us more about the changes in Dead Space 3. As fans of the series, we really enjoyed what we played, on the surface exactly what we liked about the previous games, but with so many new features included. Variety is the goal of the devs, though we're still a little concerned that with the many multiple paths on offer the game won't be stretched too thin. We'll know for sure when the game comes to 360, PS3 and PC next February.

Tabula Rasa

Nov 12, 2007

History lesson time: "Tabula rasa" is a Latin phrase popularized by John Locke in the 17th century. Translated to English it reads as "clean slate" and describes Locke's notion of human nature. In terms of Richard Garriott's new MMORPG, intellectually titled Tabula Rasa, the concept works on several levels. In the game's story, it refers to humanity starting over on a new planet after an alien invasion. For gameplay it hints at the cloning system that allows you to take a single leveled character down multiple paths at one time. And most importantly, for the genre at large, Tabula Rasa is Richard Garriott and crews' attempt to begin again with something new.

Garriott obviously looked at the success of World of Warcraft and came to the important conclusion that other big MMO releases of 2007 (Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online) missed: the traditional MMO can no longer thrive. While Tabula Rasa certainly maintains some seeming necessities of the genre - a vast, open world, tons of quests requiring the ritual slaying of the same baddies over and over again, etc. - the core gameplay mechanics are recognizably different from anything that has come before.

Endless Space review

Have you ever leaned back in your chair at a laser light show, the music swelling as the Crab Nebula forms above you and thought, "man, if only I could play a video game on this thing?" Well, Amplitude Studios has a game for you. Endless Space combines the aesthetic of a planetarium with the addictive gameplay of controlling the galaxy, one click at a time.

An appreciation for astronomy aside, what really matters for enjoying Endless Space is a passion for turn-based games like Civilization, Alpha Centauri or Age of Wonders, 4X titles based on the principles of "explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate." While any gamer will drop their jaw at Endless Space's nebula-gazing aesthetic, it takes the right kind of player to sift through the game's winding tech trees and occasionally numbing pace.

In strategy titles where sessions last hundreds of turns, campaign modes are often formalities. Endless Space agrees, and eschews story mode in favor of customizable skirmishes and online multiplayer. Game settings can be tweaked to an obsessive degree, and you can even customize your own race and save it for later use. This approach certainly makes good on the endlessness the promised by the title, but the eight disparate races and their intriguing descriptions had us wishing we could learn more about them.

One problem with Endless Space is that most of its variety, and personality, is found on stat sheets. Until you become intimately familiar with the nuances of the different Space races, you could honestly forget who you're controlling. The United Empire, a race of capitalistic Terrans, and the Amoeba, a race of giant, surprisingly diplomatic unicellular organisms, both look the same when traveling amongst the stars. They may have different victory conditions, but the closest you'll ever get to one of their colonies is hovering above the ionosphere. It made us feel rather cut off from our people.

Perhaps this is the way a calculating space ruler should feel, but it makes for a somewhat dry, "just-click-next-turn" experience. Space battles are essentially a complex version of rock-paper-scissors, but bring you close enough to the action to watch in eager anticipation as fleets deploy chaff and broadside each other with sprays of ballistics, then move in close to exchange explosive charges. It smacks of Battlestar Galactica mixed with a WWII naval battle, and while it's fun to watch at first, soon we were content to let them play out on autopilot without spectating.

The Secret World review

World of Warcraft launched eight years ago, and MMORPGs still don't know what to do with themselves. It's no longer enough to just clone WoW, if it ever was, and the genre's massive shift toward a free-to-play revenue model has developers scrambling to reinvent yesterday's premium games as sufficiently alluring freebies. The Secret World, Funcom's latest MMORPG, boldly aims for the ever-shrinking premium space, hoping to justify its monthly fee with an utterly unique setting and theme. It doesn't quite, at this early stage, despite being an undeniably interesting effort.

TSW takes place in the modern day, only in a skewed universe in which every myth, legend, and conspiracy theory is utterly, horribly true. This heightened reality serves as the backdrop for a millennia-spanning struggle between three secret societies: the craven, amoral Illuminati, the rigid, authoritarian Templars, and the chaotic, mysterious Dragon. As a new agent of your chosen faction, you'll bring your newfound paranormal abilities to the aid of your masters' agenda.

This is a very cool concept, and Funcom's writers have a ton of fun tossing in scads of far-out ideas just to see what sticks. Collectible lore items fill in the backstory, but much of the best color comes via the quest-giving NPCs, who are veritable chatterboxes. The dialogue tends toward overwritten and pulpy, but it's hard to feel too cross when there are moments of brilliance, such as writing the Illuminati as crass Hollywood hedonists. TSW's atmosphere is utterly singular, and purple prose is preferable to the more common alternative of uniform, juvenile mediocrity.

We also like the highly unorthodox way TSW handles character advancement. There are no classes or levels, so your aptitudes are completely determined by your equipped gear and slotted abilities (up to 14 at once). So, want your healer to be a tank? Find some tank gear, slot relevant abilities, and you're set. It's very cool that one character can, given enough development and gear, play any role you want them to. (Less cool is the build-swapping interface, which is only vaguely functional. Luckily, modders are working on alternatives.)

Character flexibility is second to none, but with 525 abilities to choose from it takes a lot of time and effort to come up with a decent build that properly exploits the synergies between certain weapon and ability combos. Our eyes nearly glazed over the first time we explored the wheel-like interface that holds all those abilities, and we lunged for its built-in search engine like a life preserver. A little patience and a can-do attitude got us past the initial info overload, but it'll be nice if Funcom comes up with a more user-friendly way to access all this crucial info at some point. A web-based build calculator would be a great start.
