Spec Ops: The Line co-op preview – Wars with friends

Soon after the launch of 2K's Spec Ops: The Line, the developer will release free "bonus content," bringing a two-player cooperative mode to the shooter. This content will serve as a prequel of sorts to the core game, with four missions telling the story of the events preceding Walker's entrance into Dubai. At E3 we went hands-on with two of the four missions, and enjoyed out brief tour of post-sandstorm, pre-Spec Ops Dubai.

Anyone who has played Gears of War's Horde mode essentially knows what they're getting into here, though it does have some unique elements. Much of our time was spent hunkering down behind cover, popping the heads off of enemies as they wandered too close, but the co-op is more than simply a defense game. Each has its own objectives, making sure we spent some time actually progressing through the level, instead of just hiding behind cover until all the bad men went away.

While the cooperative missions aren't going to be enough to convince anyone to buy Spec Ops: The Line who wasn't already sold, they do look like they're going to provide some additional incentive to continue playing after the campaign is beaten. Sure, we wish the game had regular old co-op of the interesting, shocking singleplayer, but with a full story, a full multiplayer mode, and this new post-release free content, we doubt we'll be wanting for any additional content anytime soon.
